Catherine Bakall's bio
Catherine Bakall, née Wirgin, was born on 5 october 1942 in New York City, the twin sister of Anne Wirgin. After High School, she studied Painting, design and sculpture at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and subsequently humanities and art at the City College of New York. She then went to France and studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1963 to 1964. After a one-year stay in London, she became a student in the School of Graphic Arts in Wiesbaden, Germany, subsequent to which she obtained an employment with the US Armed Forces. After a two year stay in Germany, Cathy Wirgin finally moved to London where she married Herschel Bakall, occupied various employments with the British Standards Institution, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and an image graphics company, and participated in various initiatives in community art.
Cathy's artistic accomplishments date mainly from the period starting around 1970 and took several forms: drawing, oil painting, projects for creating and illustrating children's books, ceramics. The characteristics of her work are: humor, a very sure sense of color, sensitivity, and spontaneity.
Catherine Bakall died on 9 August 2007 in London.
